This image was inspired by the canals of Brugge. I had to break the scene into three separate files so I could manage the memory demands of the ivy (generated courtesy of Thomas Luft's program). Passes from the three scene files were composited back together in Nuke. The lighting rig is fairly straightforward but the reflection had to be carefully managed as it's doing most of the heavy lifting (typical of a nighttime scene). The background and sky are hand-painted (as are all the texture passes) and mapped on a plane. Modeled in 3dsMax and rendered with V-Ray.
